Most dogs are puppies for the first 12 months of their life. Large breed dogs such as Labrador Retrievers or Great Danes act like puppies until they are two years of age! During the puppy months, your dog will be learning potty training, how to eat on a schedule, how to properly socialize and obedience. This is an important stage in a dog’s life. Many behavior problems can be avoided with proper training and socialization during the first few months of the dog’s life. It is very important your dog receive proper medical care during this stage in order to live a long and healthy life. With proper care, a small breed dog can live up to 15 years of age, and a large breed dog can live up to 12 years of age!

After the puppy months have passed, your dog is now an adult dog. The adult years are generally from one to six years of age. As an adult, your dog should be on a healthy diet, receive regular heartworm prevention and routine veterinary examinations. This is also a great time to concentrate on home dental care and regular bathing, nail trims and skin care. During these years your dog establishes a routine and becomes a wonderful companion to their human family!

At seven years of age your dog is considered a senior dog. For larger breeds such as Great Danes and Rottweilers, the senior years may start as early as five years of age. During the senior years, your veterinarian typically recommends regular examinations and blood screenings, and may recommend certain medications or supplements to help your dog live longer and healthier.
